About Drama Therapy India

Drama Therapy India (DTI) is a nationwide initiative focused on increasing awareness, improving access to inclusive mental health support, and contributing to the broader health systems in India by centering drama-therapy processes.

Registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act, 1960, DTI serves as a collective working to grow the understanding and application of drama-therapy throughout the country. Through collaboration, research, education, and advocacy, we work to:

  • Incorporate drama-therapy into mainstream mental and public health services.

  • Develop clear ethical practices and professional standards to ensure safety and trust for both clients and drama-therapy practitioners.

  • Strengthen opportunities for learning, connection, and shared support among drama therapists, mental health professionals, public health policymakers, and the communities they serve.

  • Encourage research and skill-building initiatives, while establishing partnerships with other national and global organizations.

  • Address health inequities by improving the availability and quality of drama-therapy services across the country.

  • Contribute to the WHO’s global agenda to further Arts in Public Health policies.

What is Drama-Therapy?

Drama-therapy is recognized world over as a type of active, creative, and embodied psychotherapy that employs theatre techniques, such as role-play, storytelling, movement, and improvisation, to develop emotional, social, cognitive and relational insights and skills to enable change.

Practiced by trained clinicians, drama-therapy is used across diverse physical and virtual settings including hospitals and clinics, rehabilitation centers, community spaces, schools, colleges, shelters and more. It can also be adapted for use throughout the lifespan, with individuals, couples, families and groups. Drama-therapists are allied health professionals and often work as part of treatment/intervention teams and are trained to interface with other practitioners.

In India, this is a new emerging field with huge potential to address some of the considerable mental health, public health and climate health challenges at scale.
